The weather is changing to cold and dreary.
The Holidays are fast approaching.
It’s this time of year that 40% of Americans see an increase in depression, and an increase in marital dissatisfaction and divorce.
Why is that?
In my humble opinion and observation, we have placed incredibly high expectations on ourselves and our families this time of year that often don’t get met. The build up of expectation inevitably leads to an avalanche of disappointment and emotional distress.
During the holidays we are acutely reminded that family can be hard. That we don’t have enough money or time for the things culture says we should have and should be doing, and that we probably consume waaaay too much sugar.
Don’t fall for the trap.
Have grace for yourself and your family.
Exercise and take a nap if you need to.
Stay connected to community like Church.
Find trusted people you can vent to.
Be quick to forgive and move on.
When you feel disappointment or dissatisfaction start to creep up on your heart, dig into your faith and remind yourself of your identity in Christ.
If you don’t know Jesus find people that do. They are your allies.
(Also remember, pumpkin pie is baked vegetables masquerading as dessert.)
Colossians 3:13
13 Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others.
Love,
Pastor John
