Break Out of the Orphanage!

“But when the right time came, God sent his Son, born of a woman, subject to the law. God sent him to buy freedom for us who were slaves to the law, so that he could adopt us as his very own children. And because we are his children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, prompting us to call out, “Abba, Father.””

‭‭Galatians‬ ‭4:4-6‬ ‭NLT‬‬

This is probably my top five, in terms of favorite scriptures. The clarity this passage gives us in learning of our new identity in Christ is mind blowing. According to this scripture, God has purchased you out of your slavery of sin, and has adopted you as His own child. You didn’t earn it, nor do you deserve it. It was His desire to do this, despite your mess and inability to be obedient to Him. All you can do is receive it. It’s the ultimate love story and picture of sacrificial love. Paul in his writing could not make it any more clear.

As if it were not enough to adopt us, regardless of our undeserving estate, He gives us His Holy Spirit so we can intimately know Him and grow in His nature. God did not adopt you to give you access to His heavenly orphanage. He adopted you so He could have an intimate relationship with you, and so you could share in His Glory. The problem is that it takes time to unlearn our fallen nature. We are so accustomed to our orphan identity of sin and death that we rebel against our divine inheritance. So God in His wisdom has given us the gift of the Holy Spirit working within us. Giving His blood bought children, the power and desire to pursue God and know Him.

The gifts of the Holy Spirit are an added bonus but they are not the point. In fact, until you desire to learn the nature of the giver you will always abuse his gifts he has given you. The primary function of the Holy Spirit in your life is to empower your now resurrected spirit (once dead in sin) to pursue, receive, and have a transformative relationship with the Father. When we say in church, “Come Holy Spirit.” What we are actually saying is, “help us”. We need help connecting with the Father. We need help overcoming our flesh and receiving Abba as we gather together. Walking in the power of the Holy Spirit is walking in the revelation that your daddy is God Almighty. The result of this is a life filled with miracles, and Holy Spirit fruit. This is for all believers! Whether you believe it or not. If you have given your life to Jesus you have access to the Father through the Holy Spirit. So drink deeply of His presence and enjoy your new identity.

Love,

Pastor John
